The Labour Party has filed a judicial protest in court to contest the Malta Resources Authority’s decision over the utility tariffs.
The protest was filed by Joe Mizzi, Labour Party parliamentary group whip, assisted by Justyne Caruana.
Mr Mizzi expressed his doubts on the manner in which the MRA justified the Gonzi administration request to increase the electricity and water tariffs.
The PL accused the MRA of acting as the government’s “rubber stamp.” This is the latest of a series of legal procedures Mr Mizzi took against the MRA and the Department for consumer and fair competition.

Meanwhile, there was no reaction from the Gonzi administration on Labour Leader Joseph Muscat’s claim that the government’s proposal to the MRA on the utility tariffs was inflated by €5 million.
On 6 November, the government said that it wanted to collect €74.2 million; nonetheless, the proposal put forward to the MRA was of €79.2 million.
Dr Muscat had also revealed that the government added a further €15 million to the utility tariffs just because the formula to calculate the tariffs was changed. The government has remained mum on this issue.
