Parliament committee mets organisations working in social sector

Independent (06-02-2009)
Parliament’s social affairs committee has started a series of meetings outside the House with organisations working in the social sector, so that committee members would see for themselves the useful work these organisations do.

The first such meeting has been held at Dar Guzeppa Debono in Mgarr, Gozo, which is led by professional volunteers who assist single mothers and their families in various matters, such as rights, better self-awareness, and regaining confidence. The home was built at a time when single mothers were hardly accepted in society, and actually rejected by their family, coming to need alternative accommodation.

The home gives importance to formation meetings for young people, both in the home and at school, on the value of sexuality, sexual health, and the importance of love, loyalty, communication and couples’ commitment. Gozo hospital staff, local organisations and professional people advise single mothers about the services at Dar Guzeppa Debono, and the mothers go there freely.

At its meeting the committee discusseed the importance of the home from various aspects and learned about instruction given to the single mothers. The home also works in tandem with other agencies, such as Appogg, and with international services. It has had recourse to EU funds.

The MPs taking part were committee chairman Edwin Vassallo, and Frederick Azzopardi, Justyne Caruana and Michael Gonzi.
