Day Care facilities for the Disabled

In a statement, Justyne Caruana, spokesperson for Equality and the Family, said that the Labour Party cannot remain impassive in the light of the complaints that the party has lately received from the clients of day care centres for the disabled.

The clients of these centres, who are individuals who suffer from some form of disability, are being transported from their home to the centre in vans, which are not equipped with air conditioning facilities. This is the cause of untold hardship for these individuals, some of whom suffer from very complex medical conditions.

One should note, she stated, that in order to provide such a service, the Foundation is paying thousands of euros from the government's coffers. In spite of this cost, these disabled individuals are suffering due to the lack of air-conditioning facilities in the transport they have to use.

The workers at the day care centres are themselves very worried and demoralized as a result of this mismanagement which is leading to hardship for their clients and a level of insecurity in their place of work. Ever since the setting up of the Foundation, the workers have felt very demotivated because of the way they are being treated which is itself a consequence of decisions that are taken without any consultation whatsoever.

While the Labour Party expressed its solidarity with the workers at these day care centres, it encourages the authorities to address the workers' discontent, which could lead to resignations. These would in turn cause further hardship to the clients of these centres. Disabled individuals would be the ones to suffer most, and it is therefore for this reason that the Labour Party insists that this issue should be
afforded immediate attention.

The Labour Party appealed to the Government not to remain impassive in all issues related to the running of day care centres for the disabled. Disabled individuals have a right to the best of service and to be treated in a manner, which respects their personal dignity.
