Xmas at Pamargan

Maltastar (24-11-2008)
It is still November and our roundabouts are already decorated for Christmas time. Traditionally Christmas decorations are left for the first week of December so we are seeing them quite early. One particular reason for this might be to instill a Christmas feel good factor early and to take people’s mind off the burdens we will be shouldering very shortly.

The utility tariff increases were quite a shock for everybody and wherever you go and whoever you speak to, this subject keeps coming up. Everybody is disturbed by this and the anxiety is quite evident. Christmas decorations might have a beneficial effect on some. Yet, such effect is superficial and will be very short lived. However, it is very interesting to note the way PN strategists think. The strategy of distraction is widely used by PN and in many cases it does work.

However, this time they are stretching it too far and family stability is at stake. At this time of the year people are usually budgeting for Christmas gifts and outings but this year everybody is saving up to pay utility bills for water and electricity they probably did not consume.

In Gozo these last days the situation became more and more precarious. Pamargan employees are on the edge. Eight employees were already fired and the rest were put on four day week schedule.

Amongst employees there is great tension that they will lose their job. In Gozo we already experienced such a situation a couple of years ago and we have not recovered yet. For these employees there will be no festivities but only tension and hardship.

Is this what GonziPN promised last March? What about the letter of comfort GonziPN sent to the people before the election? My solidarity goes to all Pamargan workers and their families. Words are not enough to remedy the situation so I call upon Government to shoulder the responsibility for what is happening to these people.

It is not fair that the country is such in a mess as a result of the election aftermath. GonziPN is the culprit and the least the government can do is go back and revoke this inhuman tariff decision.
