Time is ripe to act on inclusion

Clayton Micallef’s case should not be ignored and if the government felt easy about the situation, where a 24-year-old disabled man ended being cared for at St Vincent de Paule old people’s home, the Labour Party would deplore the situation, MLP family spokesperson Justyne Caruana said.

Mr Micallef’s problem arose because the government did not have at its disposal the human resources to offer home help. There were many other families with a disabled person in the home and many requests for home help have been pending for years.

The government always said it did not have the material and human resources to give this help, and the government had been dragging its feet about this for years. There were many disabled persons who were not treated properly and ended in unsuitable institutions. Rights were not to be met as charity and if the government really believed in inclusion, this was the moment to prove it, Dr Caruana said.
