Sir Anthony 's Legacy

Maltastar (10-05-2008)
In the last days Malta has lost its beloved first President of Malta, Sir Anthony Mamo.

I never met him but during his funeral the recurrent comment I heard was ‘he was a gentleman’. That certainly says it all. As soon as I started reading law at University, we started circulating the ‘Mamo Notes’. These notes were compiled by Sir Anthony Mamo years ago and are still in circulation today. Each and every law student has benefited and still benefits from the teachings of this learned man and it is certainly a pity that so far nobody undertook the task to update these notes to reflect the amendments introduced during the years.

As a statesman, Sir Anthony Mamo was a person of integrity. Independently of his political beliefs he always had his country at heart. This should certainly be an example to us all in the political arena. This applies even more today in the aftermath of the last election.

The situation is a particular one with a government who has been in power for many years ending up in a rather precarious situation of a minimal majority. Certainly the arrogant attitude manifested so far has its days counted. As an Opposition, we are there to be counted and not to be insulted. The ‘Speaker bait’ was a flagrant tentative. Government should know better than try such tricks with us. We may be in opposition but we are strong and half of the country is behind us trusting us to work for the benefit of the country in the true sense – with integrity and accountability.
