Practice politics of inclusion with Clayton Micallef

The case of Clayton Micallef poses an opportunity for the government to practice what it has been preaching with regards to inclusion.

Justyne Caruana, Labour spokesperson for family and equality said that it is deplorable if the government is comfortable with a situation, where a 24-year-old ends up in St Vincent De Paul, an institution definitely not suitable for his circumstances.

Justyne Caruana commented on the fact that Clayton’s problem originates from the fact that the government does not have enough human resources at its disposal in order to provide the services of home help.

This problem was not encountered only by Clayton but a number of Maltese and Gozitan families who live with a disabled person. In fact, there are many demands for home help by these families, many of which have been pending for months and even years.

The recurrent reason given by the government is always that of a lack of human and material resources, imparted the labour spokesperson. However, the government has never really addressed these problems.

‘Persons who have a disability also have their own rights and there needs to be a substantial improvement in their quality of life, along with a more positive attitude that should result in concrete actions so that their rights are truly respected and strengthened,’ Justyne Caruana said.

“Respecting one’s right is not an act of charity,” concluded Justyne Caruana.
