In July 1981 women across South America came together in Columbia to highlight the extent and diversity of violence against women. It was agreed to adopt 25 November as International Day Against Violence Against Women. The day is also known as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

The first White Ribbon campaign was launched in Canada in 1991 after the mass shooting of 14 female students at the University of Montreal and it was in 1999 that the United Nations recognised the day with the White Ribbon, as a symbol of hope for a world where women and girls can live free from the fear of violence.

Dr Justyne Caruana Labour spokesperson for family and equality, on the occasion of the International Day Against Domestic Violence reiterated Labour’s commitment in its fight against domestic violence.
While Labour expresses its solidarity with all those persons that have fallen victim of domestic violence, it encourages all those that are suffering to have courage and report to the competent authorities the violence that is taking place.

Labour also encourages the government to as soon as possible commission a study to evaluate the situation especially vis-à-vis the effectiveness of the laws regarding domestic violence. We feel that the time has come to introduce amendments that strengthen the rights of the victims and increase their protection especially when it comes on the orders for the protection of the victim and eviction of who ever committed violence.

It also urged the government to invest in more human and other recourses so that victims will have all the support required. Above all there is the need that existing services are more victim oriented and shelters are increased especially in Gozo where the government offers no such help.

Dr Caruana said that, "while as a party we express our solidarity with the victims of domestic violence, we appeal to those that in the silence of their home are suffering from this behaviour, have courage and exit from this vicious circle. At the same time we encourage the government to invest more on the entities, organisations and structures involved in this so delicate sector so that victims will find all the support they require. Thus more victims will find the courage to leave the environment of violence that they are living in and rest assured that they will find all the support for them and their children, so that as it is just, they have a better life."
