The Labour Party yesterday called on the government to clarify its position and take a stand on the proposed amendments on maternity leave put forward by the European Commission.
In a statement, Labour spokesperson for the Family and Equality Justyne Caruana said that among the proposals put forward by the European Commission is the extension of maternity leave by four weeks to the benefit of the mother’s health while acting as an incentive to increase the birth rate. The Labour Party sees these proposals as very positive and will be at the forefront to push them forward, said Dr Caruana. “We also hope that more rights will be given to both parents.” |

These proposals are perfect for Malta especially since demographics clearly show that the birth rate has reduced in the past years and the choice whether to have children or not is affected by career aspirations and economic factors, she added. “The Labour Party will be carefully following these proposals and hopes that these will be approved as quickly as possible,” she said. |
