Summertime is over now and we are all resuming our winter routines. I do not know why but this time of the year really gets me blue. When I was a student you can imagine the tantrums I used to make! Then when I got older and started reading at University, on first of October, I used to look like a dead woman walking on campus. I am not usually moody but the change of weather really does effect me. I gather however that the change of weather does not affect only me. I was watching Prim Minister Dr Gonzi, PN Secretary Joe Saliba and other PN exponents during the Independence activities at the Granaries at Floriana and yes I really think that they were thunder stricken. While Minister Louis Galea was quoting Aquilina’s Maltese dictionary, Secretary Joe Saliba invented a new variant of the word ‘suffara’ meaning ‘whistle’ and according to Saliba it is now a ‘saffara’. Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi solicited his limited crowd to visit their dentist and strengthen their teeth. He said much more than that and with his voice high pitched up especially when our Charlon Gouder was interviewing him. Should I say he was hysterical because he raised his voice? I was quite taken aback by this kind of speeches last week but just for a split of a second. Then I realised that PN people can afford to say whatever they like and please in this country as if they have some divine blessing to do so. On the other hand, we MLP people do not have that divine blessing and we have to watch out what we say because otherwise they brand us as hysterical, mummies, serpents, empty bottles, people of unsound minds and much more. This is the Maltese version of freedom of expression – you have the right to express yourself but depending on which side of the political spectrum you come from or side. |
