Thoughts in a Shoe Box.

Malta Star (06-04-2007)

The shoe box baby news gave me a lot of food for thought.

We all heard about cases of couples who would like to have children and go through endless medical procedures and treatments to have children. Not to mention also the psychological hardship of all those women who have to deal with infertility and all those who go through repeated miscarriages and bury their own feotuses after missed abortions and other mishaps.

Then there are mothers who are blessed with this gift of life and give away their babies or abandon them.

I could never understand how a mother giving birth to her baby could do such a thing – no matter how deeply in distress she is. I am nobody to judge this mother but if these things happen it is a red alarm for us all. It means that this mother did not find the support she needed and had to resort to such an extreme remedy.

All over our country we have young mothers-to-be, some of them in their teens, facing problems and dilemmas about their unwanted pregnancies.

All help and support should be available to them – guiding them throughout their pregnancy and after.

Sex among teenagers is a reality. We cannot restrain it but we can educate our teenagers to understand sex more and be more responsible.
