Rats in Gozo |

Sometimes I really wonder how things in Gozo are so amateurishly handled. Each and every day I am in the Gozo court to carry out my duties as a lawyer. One morning I went to a particular section for an errand and found court deputy registrars and senior clerks wearing disposable gloves searching for a dead rat in their file closets. It was a ridiculous scene but at the same time very dramatic because what these people were doing falls within the competence of a specialised section who knows how to deal with the situation and are equipped for such purposes. However, these people came much later and meanwhile Gozo court employees had to pull up their sleeves to control the situation. I brought up the matter in Parliament and the higher ranks in court apparently did not like it. Instead of thanking the employees for taking control of the situation, they chided them for complaining in my presence. As if needed someone had to tell me about it! I saw it with my own eyes and smelt it with my own nose! In Gozo we frequently smell rats and big ones too. This week for example a court expert testified under oath that she could not find an original document which she was appointed to examine and report on – the same document however ‘appeared’ in the Court records during the hearing in Court. \ Next week we have Gozo’s budget debate and we will speak and hear about many real rats here and there... We will not just smell them.
