Cowards

Malta Star (18-05-2007)

My great grandmother was a very wise lady and she used to tell me that if I wanted others to respect me, I had to respect myself first. On a greater scale, we cannot expect foreigners to love and appreciate our country unless we do so first.

Sometimes however, I really wonder whether some of our fellow citizens do have national pride or not. I really abhore negligence and carelessness whatever the situation or circumstance let alone acts of vandalism and willful damage.

People, if I may call them so, indulging themselves in damaging our heritage - be it natural or cultural - are nothing more than coward criminals. It is very easy to target a tree or a monument – these will not rebel or report. That is were cowardice reaches its climax.

These people have no right to damage something which belongs to us all. On the other hand however, much is left to be desired security-wise. Damage done to our heritage is priceless. Whatever is done to protect our heritage and no matter how much it costs, it is an investment for the benefit of all of us and for generations to come.

It is not just trees they damaged but they tarnished our national identity and pride. Shame on coward criminals.
