Arts and Culture are Ours

Malta Star (01-06-2007)

Last week Carmelo Abela and myself launched the vision paper on sports and culture. Carmelo was responsible to co-ordinate the sports section while I was responsible for the culture section.

The main concept of this vision statement is that arts and culture belong to us all and that each and every one of us must participate actively in these spheres to make our lives more complete and holistic – both on an individual level and even more as a nation. This culture vision paper is soliciting general participation enhancing inclusion of both 'established' and 'aspirant artists' and we are stressing on equitable distribution of available funds so that each and every talented has a fair share of available funds.

To reach our goals and render culture ‘for all’, we are calling on existing voluntary infrastructure both clubs and church groups and also individuals to collaborate with us and make this policy document work.

The proposals are many and varied ranging from tax exemptions to industry sponsoring art to special attention to cultural participation in cultural programmes for children and the aged. We are contemplating schemes available to artists to help them establish themselves as well as modern premises. The setting up of an artists’ council is intended to involve artists in decision making.

The invitation is open and all those who are interested in what this vision statement offers, please come forward and have your say.
