Changes in electoral districts

Malta Today

In the light of the approved changes in electoral districts, what is your position on the proposed constitutional amendment through which Gozo would be recognised as an electoral region-thus reuniting Ghajnsielem with the rest of Gozo?

I am very very pleased that from Government side they are agreeing with Malta Labour Party. May I remind you that we have been talking about Gozo as a region since 1996 and we when in Government we were in the process of setting up the Gozo Regional Committee to target specific Gozo issues. A project which the Nationalist Government did not even bother to consider.

Gozo is one and will always be one for all intents and purposes. However, I have a query regarding Government's side true intentions. I believe that from Government side it all boils down to votes - Ghajnsielem being a strong Nationalist stronghold. This is sustained by what we read in newspapers that PN officials are urging nationalist voters to shift their identity cards elsewhere so that PN votes are 'not lost'. Also I read comments in your last Sunday's issue that PN MPs are banking on the Electoral Commission to address Gozo issue so that eventually further changes may be effected to the other districts affecting them.

Ghajnsielem will always be part of Gozo and Ghajnsielem people will always be Gozitans. Personally I believe that Gozo should be one and the same district but should the Electoral Commission (which by the way was appointed by the Nationalist Government) stick to its decision I will always be ready to speak out for Ghajnsielem and the people - whether they can vote for me or not.
